The Cherchez la femme! research and creative project aimed to uncover and demystify the impact of gender differences and their consequences for the lives and creative production of women architects in the Netherlands during the 20th century, focusing on understanding the factors that shaped women’s experiences in architecture. Specifically, the project sought to make visible the role models and visionaries still hidden in the field, to identify and understand the conditions that rendered certain actors—particularly women— rendered invisible over time, and to interpret gender differences in architecture within the context of the social and political history of their time: no matter what building, a woman has always been involved. Some of the results included a periodization adjusting the canon to relevant moments in history highlighting the societal position of women: Trailblazers (1918-1940), Back to the Sink (1945-1967), Second Feminist Wave (1967-1989), and Institutionalization (1989-2017). The project also documented the life and work of representatives from each period, including the unfolding of the archive of early TU Delft student Guus Schreuder-Gratama, which informed the narrative of the early 20th century. For each representative, a prototype game was designed to help disseminate their stories: an escape room for Guus Schreuder-Gratama, an online trivia game for the Vrouwen Adviescommissie (VAC); a quiz for Luzia Hartsuyker-Curjel; and a geocaching multicache focusing on the renovation and co-creation projects by architect Ineke Hulshof in the city of Rotterdam. In parallel, each story was documented by filmmaker Marit Geluk. The project received funding under the Architecture Grant Program from the Creative Industries Fund NL (Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science) for 50,000 €, and was developed by researchers and architects Lidewij Tummers and María Novas, in collaboration with the Dutch National Collection of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Collecting Otherwise project at the Nieuwe Instituut, from 2021 to 2023.
