The Research 3 course in the Master’s program in Architecture and Urbanism at the Tilburg Academy of Architecture and Urbanism builds on the foundations established in Research 1 and 2, aligning closely with the Design Studios. With an increased level of complexity, students independently develop a research proposal related to their design studio theme —in this case, the Design Studio “Society ReWrite”. The course focuses on advancing students’ understanding of research within their design process, employing mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) to explore relevant sociospatial developments, design theory, social issues, policy trends, and more. Through this comprehensive approach, students are encouraged to cultivate a distinctive philosophy for their learning journey and design practice. By integrating theoretical and empirical insights, students critically evaluate their design goals and assignments, deepening their understanding of contextual factors—social, natural, spatial, economic, and political—as well as theoretical and practical discourses.
